Don't bother with this series.Dec 01, 2009
By Armando N. Roman I ordered this set of Max and Alexander along with Carol, and while I wasn't as disappointed with them as I was Carol, I still don't feel like I got my money's worth. And this is coming from a guy who used to collect Hot Toys' 1/6 scale figures.
First, the good- Alexander looks about 80% like he does in the movie. Unfortunately, he isn't in-scale with Max or Carol (or the other Wild Things for that matter) at all. It's just weird looking at him next to Carol and seeing he's not a whole lot smaller like he should have been. Remember that being a key part of his character in the movie? The paint on him is good though, and like Carol, his eyes are incredible. Alexander has no articulation, just like the others, and feels just as light as carol. Again, this feels like a cheap PVC figure or a piggy bank. While he -is- durable, you can't help but feel like you could permanently cave in his head if you stepped on it even a little bit on accident. Max isn't anything special. The overall sculpt is good, but it doesn't look like Max Records in the face. He features a removable crown and scepter which is a complete pain to get in his right hand! You have to remove the top part of it and slide the pole in his hand, then put the top back on, and even then you have to force it in. Be careful with that.
I can't see children getting much out of these figures, as they're more of adult collectibles, being made by Medicom, and a part of their VCD line. It's too bad they didn't put as much effort into these as they do their Star Wars, Marvel and Alien lines.
I really don't like this line of figures and won't be buying the others. Medicom's known for having overpriced toys that could be made much better, and this is another example of that. And you know what? I've been a huge fan of WTWTA since I was little, and saw the movie just 5 days before my figures arrived. I was in such a big WTWTA fanboy mode after that, and once these arrived, they pretty much killed it for me. Unless you're completely obsessed with the Wild Things and need any and everything Wild Thing-related, I recommend you spend your money elsewhere.
