2Sorry - Disappointed!Jul 07, 2009
By E. Goldblatt "Clearsky"
I'm sorry to ruin the other reviews of this product, but here it goes! I'm a BIG collector of Star Trek and other Sci-Fi and Space related props, toys, and models (just ask my wife - she thinks I have way to much stuff!). Anyway, to be honest, I'm pretty disappointed in this product. The operative word for the review is CHEAP (1)!

The Tricorder is VERY cheaply (2) made - both in looks and finish. I do like this sounds and lights (hence the 2 stars), but the unit itself is - well - cheap (3)! I know the price was very reasonable, but I think it could have been much better, even if it would be a bit more expensive. The stickers/decals are hard to read and cheaply (4) placed, the front mirror/silver finish just looks bad (hard to explain), and the unit feels - again - cheap (5). As mentioned above, I have many many other prop\toys (Art Asylum, Matchbox, Playmate, etc) and this one is the cheesiest and cheapest (6) one I own, I probably will not display with my other stuff - way to cheap (7). Sorry! P.S. I think that is a record for someone using cheap (8) in a review!

4It's a Toy, not a collectable.Jun 01, 2010
By Talvi
This is a toy - or for something to use with a costume - and not a collectable. The price reflects that. I bought it so my 7 year old could use it with her Uhura costume and she's quite content with it. I don't expect it to be sitting on a shelf somewhere in a display cabinet or for it to outlast the pasta in the cupboard. :)

2Cheap looking, Cheap sound, Awkward flip panelDec 01, 2009
By C. Gabriel
I bought this as I liked the new sound effects and electronics from the new Star Trek movie (even though the Tricorder was not even used in the movie for some reason) but have to say this is cheap looking, the sounds are cheap and dont continue they only last a few seconds and you have to press the button again. It should have a constant sound. The front flap flips open and sticks straight up which makes it hard to push the buttons. Whoever made this should be fired.

I own the Tricorder from Next Generation and it is much better, as well as the iPhone Tricorder apps with are even better and have authentic sound that continues while you are scanning.

DONT BUY THIS CHEAP THING.

5STar Trek Tricorder - The Best Of The ThreeApr 21, 2009
By Lorenzo M. in the Hollywood CA Area "Movie Wathcer Extrodinaire"
Star Trek is back and strong in 2009. When it comes to toys - usually the best ones are in the hundreds of dollars and you hate to touch becaus eof their price - however - Playmates is doing it right! Detail, quality and functionality. This tricorder, based on the new Star Trek film - is fun. Lights and sounds from the moment you open it - to the moment you close it.
Durability: I can see really younger kids snapping the flap to hard. But if you use it as if it were real - no problem.
Educational Value; Not really - but if might ask kids and some adults what is a Tricorder and what is its purpose!
There are two seprate control buttons that each create three diffrent light and sound patterns.
If you ever thought of yourself as Mr. Spock or Scotty - these are the devices that are as close to them as their uniforms.
Detailing stickers and a small design make them slightly smaller then the "real" versions, but great for the Trek fan. And at their price - you can't go wrong! Very well made.

4Smaller than I thought.Feb 03, 2012
By portiasdas
This tricorder is a lot smaller than I expected. It makes sounds from the movie and the lights blink on and off. You need it only if you want your uniform to be complete, otherwise, don't waste your cash.
