Not as strong as some of the other boxsetsFeb 16, 2011
By Jorge Ruben With the advent of Disney XD's awesome Avengers cartoon, my kids bugged me for this set when they first saw it. And truth be told the prospect of being able to finally assemble a full Avengers' team had its merit. The execution of the set, however, leaves a bit to be desired. Included in the set are Hank Pym AKA Ant-Man AKA Giant-Man, The Wasp, Golden Armor Iron Man and the Hulk. Hank Pym, the resident scientist of the team, is presented here in his classic guises of Ant-Man and Giant-Man. Pym comes with a removable bulky chest and belt pieces for when he's Giant-Man, with a more streamlined and articulated Ant-Man body underneath. He comes with an excellent Ant-Man helmet with antennae that are surprisingly stiff; they won't be breaking off anytime soon. There's also a full-head Giant Man piece. Careful with the Giant-Man helmet; it is slightly smaller than the head and tends to get stuck if you push it down too low. He also comes with a blond hair-piece in case you just want him to hang out with the others as plain old Hank Pym. Overall, with the abundance of pieces available for him, Pym is by far the star of the set.
Janet Van Dyne, the diminutive Wasp, is presented here in her classic red and black outfit (which led my 3-year old to ask me why she's red and black when wasps are yellow and black. All I could say was "creative license", which solved THAT issue). She comes complete with a bulky chest piece with two wings, as well as a removable skirt. The chest piece is also removable and can be replaced by a small piece that fits over her neck and waist to allow a more streamlined figure. Transferring the wings to the smaller piece is tricky because they are REALLY squeezed onto their pegs, but it's not impossible. Her outfit is completed by a pair of gauntlets as well as simple red hands, a stinger head piece, along with a separate full-head mask and a bob of brown hair. Believe me when I say that the bulky chest piece and skirt make the figure nearly unplayable, as it restricts her movement and keeps the figure loose because the waist peg has a hard time fitting into the body tightly. Which means, every time your kids try to make Wasp "fly", she falls apart. Additionally, the full-head helmet/mask is a NIGHTMARE to remove once you put it on. My daughter pushed it all the way down on the head and that was all she wrote. It ain't coming off. Overall, she (and Iron Man) feel and look like they're right out of the 1960's, which is obviously the effect they were going for.
Speaking of Iron Man, the Golden Armor Iron Man is included in this set. It's basically a repaint of the "Classic Iron Man" that was one of the exclusives in Wave 6/7. It's pretty well-constructed, and looks like one massive piece of armor. He comes with a big removable chest-piece (with an antenna on the back, a nice touch), as well as a removable "skirt" piece. He comes with a telescoping "hammer" hand that makes him look even more daunting. Underneath the helmet is a representation of 1960's Tony Stark, millionaire playboy. No RDJ to be found here. He comes with an old-fashioned hairpiece (in keeping with the 60's), and a separate pair of flesh-colored arms. He truly DOES Look like he just stepped out of the 1960's. Excellent job on the armor and the entire look of the figure.
Finally, we have the Hulk. He comes up with a pumped-up chest piece and a less-cartoony face, in a marked departure from the original Wave I release. He also comes with a larger set of feet and a waist insert in order to make him larger. But for some reason none of it works. Part of it may be the sculpting. There's just something missing. While less cartoony than the original, he winds up looking, well, bored. Better is the Hulk that was included in the Defenders boxset, or even the Battle Damaged Hulk from the Incredible Hulk movie set. This one screams 1960's, just like his teammates, but for some reason it doesn't work with this guy.
While this was a welcome addition to the Minimates line, I don't see why they couldn't just release a Wasp and Ant-Man two-pack, considering that there are already numerous Iron Man and Hulk figures out there, as well as a few different Thors (why was he not included with THIS boxset?) with which you can form your own Avengers team. Indeed my kids have formed their own Avengers team with the movie Iron Man, movie Hulk and Heroes Reborn Thor. They adore the Wasp figure, but it's more a case of her being the only Wasp figure, so by default she's going to be the best Wasp figure. The Hank Pym figure is strong, but even he's got numerous incarnations out there with both Goliath and Yellowjacket figures released in the Minimates line. Additionally, Wasp is a figure that really is in need of a makeover. Believe me when I say that your kids, if they're anything like mine, are going to gravitate to the Wasp figure and use the more recent incarnations of the heroes to round out their Avengers team. This boxset is strictly for completists and collectors.
