I bought these pens with the Chessex Role Playing Play Mat: "Megamat" Double-Sided Reversible Mat for RPGs and Miniature Figure Games (34 in x 48 in). They worked really well for our purposes. There was light smudging after a two hour play session, but you had to be very close to the mat to notice. When we were done it was very easy to wipe off with a little bit of water.
