4A fun and exciting addition, but not for the faint of heart!Jan 24, 2007

We tried out our new Tower Expansion and were pleasantly surprised at how simple the rules were! It added a whole new dimension to the game though, and you really need to brace yourself to have all your potential points taken away if your follower is taken prisoner off of a big city or farming area. It made the game much more intense though, and it really causes you to change your strategy to keep the towers in mind. We also like playing with the tower tiles just as an addition to the regular game, without actually building towers or using the new rules. The tile-holder that came with it was also useful and better quality than we expected. And it still leaves plenty of room to grow with future expansions!

3UnpredictableDec 20, 2007

Still fun way to mix up and change the game, keep things interesting- but like princess and the dragon, this expansion is more or less about wiping outotherpeople's peices. It counteracts a lot of the strategy of the original in that it is hard to plan when you don't even know if your piece will still be there 5 minutes later.

You capture meeples and can trade them like prisoners... Most times we've played, people avoid being ruthless because they don't want someone seeking the all too easy revenge. IF you like ruthless backstabing unpredictability, you just may like this expansion

5Ready? Fight!Dec 10, 2009

Carcassonne is a lot of fun. But playing the original, tile-laying turn based game came become repetitive after a while. With that in mind, a lot of expansions have been made over the years to help keep the game from becoming stale and actually change many of the once trusted strategies that got you the victory.

This expansion however, changes a little more than the rules and mechanics. This one can change your whole attitude towards playing this game. Everything goes pretty much the same, taking a turns and laying down tiles and meeples to score points as before. But you now have at your disposal a number of little wooden towers than can be placed instead of meeples on special tiles that have been marked for that use. Doing so allows you to capture an opponents meeple and keep him prisoner, to be traded for one of your own figures or to be released at the cost of 3 of your opponnets points. This makes the game into a much more strategic encounter and well, it can turn nasty.

The first time my wife and I played this, she stopped talking to me for a good half hour. She was mad at my tactics, and sour for losing. An hour later, we went at it again. More frowns followed. I thought the game was done for. To my surprise, she asked to play it a few weeks later. She didn't win, but she talked about how was I thinking about the game and soon after, she beat me by leaving her previous mind set of scoring and focusing on either attacking or defending with the right moves.

The game has since then been played many times and offers something new and different to our Carcassonne playing. While not for everyone, I highly recommend trying it out, if you can stomach the new level of tactics this one offers.

3The tower is useful; the tower play, not so muchOct 29, 2010
By M. Staller
I bought The Tower Expansion after a suggestion from a sales guy at the game store I bought "Carcassonne The Bog Box 2" from. I was unimpressed at the balsa wood construction of the tower; I was expecting something larger and heavier, and usable with more ease in removing tiles from within the stacks- rather than just the top tile of either column of tiles. But all-in-all, it is still effective at holding the tiles and it looks good on the table with the developing game board.

The play of this expansion is novel, at best. You must throw away the common denominators of your strategies of the Carcassonne base game and it's other expansions, because at any moment and out of pure luck an opponent may draw a tower tile and simply place it near your in-play meeple and take it off the board, so long has he/she hasn't used up their abundant supply of tower pieces in this expansion. Another drawback I've experienced is that everyone that comes to play wants to try this expansion, and even though I'm not a pro at Carcassonne, I win outright by a very large margin because it takes a few games to realize how to play without constantly losing your meeples to these towers.

In defense of this particular expansion I should mention that I have not yet added the tiles from this expansion and simply ignored the rule set that comes along with it, but I plan to. Just like the other expansions, there are some creative new tiles that are fun to play.

If you own The Big Box, I would recommend this expansion as I find it worth the money for the tower itself. If you are considering this to be the first expansion to your base game, I would recommend several other expansions before this one, such as Cathedrals or Traders.

5Best ExpansionMar 31, 2010

This is the best expansion game for Carcassonne. It adds an aggressive, offensive element to the game that the vanilla version was lacking. I like this game much better now.
