Great set, but "Special Edition Rookie Parallels" are dumbJan 11, 2007
By Steve in Philly This is an excellent set put out by Topps, with a lot of great rookies, nice design, and nice player selection. And if you get the year-end update set, you're set for this season.
But what's up with the "Special Edition Rookie Parallels"? They were, to my knowledge, first issued in the 2006 Topps Rookies and Traded baseball set, and all they are are regular cards that have an extra "Special Edition" stamp just under the logo. Maybe it's harsh to dock it a point for that, but c'mon, Topps, that's ridiculous. I could stand for (but didn't like) the variations in color of pen used for autographs or the mini versions of the same cards or even the different-colored borders picthed as "variations." But to just add a stamp on there and call it a special edition--that sounds like a bad joke.
But it's still a great set--just list those special edition cards on eBay, as there is probably a sucker out there somewhere who is collecting them.
That said, I will eat my words in 20 years if the Reggie Bush Special Edition is selling for 10x his regular card!
